Crackers…just crackers.

I recently downloaded the WordPress app but never got around to posting (heck, I haven’t posted even on the computer…yikes). So today I’ve decided to give it a go.

So what am I going to talk about today?

Crackers my darlings.

Homemade saltines, attempted for the very first time today. And you all get to hear about it.

For some odd reason I found myself slightly nervous to make them. Sure, everyone on Pinterest was raving how easy they were to make…but I don’t trust people of the Internet that easily.

My mum ended up sending me a few recipes then threatened me talked me into making them.

So I printed up The Prudent Homemaker’s recipe and got to work.

Now I did make some minor changes to her recipe. Instead of shortening, I used butter and instead of kosher salt I used Himalayan pink salt. And instead of kneading by hand, I cheated and did everything in my Kitchenaid mixer. The dough was a little dry so I added about a tsp of water and kneaded it some more.

The dough looked something like this:

It smelled like the butter fairies had come and kissed it.

Now that the dough was kneaded, I had to…DUN DUN DUN! ROLL THE DOUGH OUT!

I can do a lot of things, but rolling dough out sadly isn’t one of those things. After putting on some purple Hulk pants, I got really angry and rolled the dough out. It was fairly thin.

At this point I was tempted to throw that sucker on the pan and cook it up as one giant cracker. But no, I was a good girl and made it look pretty.

After that I used my pastry cutter to make a bunch of little squares (were all they all perfectly two inches? Hahahah…no.), plastered them with water and salt, and threw them into the oven. They took a total of 12 minutes to cook and came out looking like this:

They only look half eaten because as I was on my fifth cracker, I remembered to take a picture. Long story short, Mission: Crackers was a success.

So there you have it folks. After weeks of not posting all I have to offer to you is my adventures in cracker making.

Hello there my dear readers! After taking a break from my blog to focus on NaNoWriMo, I am back and ready to start posting again! 😀

So, let’s start this off with talking about NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). What is it? NaNoWriMo (NaNo for short) is where you set out to write a novel, 50,000 words, within 30 days/the whole month of November. It’s a pretty crazy thing to do, but so worth it even if you don’t win!

Last year I finished about two days before the month was over. This time I finished at 2 AM on the 20th with 50,105 words. And for this year I did some very minor plotting (just the beginning), but most of it was a lot of “hey this sounds cool!” and a lot prayer. I mean like a lot of prayer.

Let’s just say Jesus kept me from going insane. 😀

Surprisingly the middle of this novel was pretty fun to write. In fact I had so much fun writing my middle that I didn’t want to stop. The end started to near and I was like a chicken with my head cut off!

The most horrifying thing happened: At around 5K from finishing, I already sort of had an ending. After adding in a bunch of songs (I may or may not have been reading the Hobbit and listening to Celtic Music while writing this novel), I only added around 1.5K words to my word count.

That’s when I started to panic and freak out. I ended up bringing a character back from the dead and finished it with the main character having a dream and then coming out of that dream (and a really weird “thank you for reading this” poem at the end as well). Needless to say the ending was weird.

BUT, the ending had some answers to questions I hadn’t knew the answer for. Nice little bonus.

Like all first drafts, this little novel of mine will need some good old fashion TLC, but not as much work as my novel from last year.

(Let’s all pretend this is me looking all clever like.)

Now, while I was doing NaNo a few of my writing buddies asked me if I was going to post any prompts on my blog and some even just asked for prompts (which is nice to know everyone likes them!)

Since it’s been a little while since I’ve posted anything, I’m going to share with you all three writing prompts. 😀

Hope these inspire you!

As night fell, the sun begin to rise and burn everything.

“Remember how you asked me to buy some groceries? Well I sort of bought a machine gun instead. But don’t freak! It was on sale!”

After all those years, she still thought I was the one sending her flowers.

Now my noble steeds, WRITE ON!!!

*You proceed to neigh righteously*

Gettin’ Bloggy with it (Na na na na na)!

*Proceeds to dance like all the cool 90s kid did*

Hello! First blog post! Exciting right?892dc59d7900eb90007bca111b9d6855

First thing: If you’re looking for a typical blog, then look no further! No, actually, turn around and run. Run really fast. Because I don’t plan on doing what’s typical or expected of me, and certainly not what’s normal. The name of the blog is Freckled Mermaids. I’m not going for normal here.

I’m going for unique. Not that “LOOK! I MAKE UNICORN CAT COLLARS AND SELL THEM ON ETSY” unique. More of the “LOOK! I WRITE ABOUT UNICORN CAT COLLARS AND SEND IT IN TO PUBLISHERS!” unique. Sadly my story about the unicorn cat collars hasn’t gotten anywhere with the publishers, so I’m working on different things at the moment.

Such as a blog.

And a fantasy book series, with fairy tale parallels, a trilogy about dragons, and an Alice in Wonderland inspired comic/graphic novel, on top of the other million  story ideas. Also cooking and baking. I do that a lot (eating what I make too).

I don’t think I need to say it, but I’m going to anyway: I am a writer. And that is why I’m doing this. I’m going to give tips, advice, and share with you my journey as a writer. But unlike other blogs, I don’t want you to get a peek into my life (that’s kind of creepy and stalkerish man). I want you to get a peek into my mind.

Which leads into why I write. I’m an INTP, a thinker.

3f3a15e1b0b888c3b01b7f402a80b3f9-I’d like to add I’m aware that Sherlock is an INTJ and not an INTP, but I just needed a really cool gif of someone thinking. Don’t judge me.-

I think a lot, it’s a hobby of mine. Call me arrogant, but I dislike the thought of the world not knowing a taste of my mind. I want someone to read my stuff and think “Wow…I get this. I think like this…It makes so much sense.”

As I mentioned above I like to cook and bake. I also like to eat. I don’t think about food as a form of energy or a source of sustenance. To me, cooking and baking are forms of art. So yes, food will be talked about from time to time. And if I’m feeling really artsy, I might even post recipes.

At this point you might be wondering, “This is nice and all…but freckled mermaids? What do they have to do with this?”

A lot actually. I have freckles all over me. My parents have freckles. My brother has freckles. A lot of my friends and family members have them too. I love freckles. I probably have freckles in my soul.

I also love mermaids and often like to think I am one myself. When you’re always finding salt in your hair, glitter on your face, and a love for the color blue, it starts to make you wonder…

Now I’d love to go on and on all day about freckles and mermaids, but I’ll save those topics for more blog posts.

I’ll also talk about books, fictional characters, movies/TV shows, my inner nerd, MBTI and other personality type stuff, and much much more!

You’ll get all of this for the small price of 5 payments of 19.95 (plus shipping and handling)!!!

Just kidding! If anything, I just want loyal readers who will be rooting for me and my works.

Okay, I would like money also.
